Church History

In 1919, Clinton Avenue Methodist Episcopal, German Methodist Episcopal, and King Street Methodist Episcopal Churches merged to form St. Paul's Methodist Church. They located in a new building at George St. near Humbolt Avenue in St. Paul in 1922.

In the late 1940's and early 1950's the church expanded during the baby boom era with growing families. Sunday School attendance rose; membership grew and a new education building was built in 1962. During the 1970's and early 1980's, membership declined and some members moved to the suburbs. The building became too big and costly for the congregation to maintain. After studying the options, a decision was made to move the church to Mendota Heights, about four miles away.

Our new building was dedicated in 1986 and the George Street Church building was acquired by the Hmong Community UMC.

Our stained glass window of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane has traveled from the King Street Church to St. Paul's on George Street, to our current location. This well-traveled window reflects the heritage and spirit of our earlier members as well as the beginings of Methodism in Minnesota.

Our Estey pipe organ was installed in the Clinton Avenue church in 1909, moved to the George Street church, and finally to the present sanctuary. After several expansions, it now has 1068 pipes, with 14 stops in 17 ranks. Thanks to the pastors and many members, St. Paul's has a beautiful organ to accompany worship services.
